Extended Learning (or “homework”)

Students who enjoy and achieve the most in schools are those best able to reflect on their learning. This means that they really participate in their learning often beyond the classroom. Traditionally this would have been called homework. One of the School’s main responsibilities is to ensure that students do reflect. Extended Learning is one of the ways in which the school does this. At Grace Higher Secondary School the partnership between the student, parent/tutor/mentor and class teacher share the responsibility for Extended Learning. Together they will ensure that work done after the school day is seen essential student progress. These tasks might need to be completed over a period of time, might be work that is necessary for the student’s continued participation in lessons or the expected area of study might be directed towards the preparation of examination.

All students will participate in Extended Learning tasks which will be set by a teacher when necessary. There will be times when it is possible for students to devise their own Extended Learning tasks after consultation with their teacher. The work will not always be written but can cover a varied number of tasks.

Attendance

Attendance at school is compulsory until the end of the scholastic term. Very occasionally absence for illness or other reasons may occur. We are required by law to keep accurate records on every absence. Ideally, we would hope that no child will ever be absent given the extensive coursework and teacher assessments which take place on a daily basis. However, if the absence is unavoidable:

  • The student should bring a note addressed to the Principal signed by the parent explaining the reason for absence –  this can be written in the school calendar.
  • Unexplained or unauthorized absence is regarded as truancy.
  • Medical or other appointments in school tie should be avoided if at all possible but if not as exempt slip must be obtained from the school
  • Any student who has been absent for 2 consecutive months without prior notice or reason will be removed from the school rolls.
